Caesarstone Competition Update : “Most Popular!”

November 21st, 2008

It looks like my design entry for ‘CaesarStone CoreSystem’ is now in the top 10 “Most Popular,” which is both a great sign and a meaningless sign.  Its great that people have noticed, but its also possible that my friends and family have just been visiting far too often. Its meaningless because the judges, if they’re doing their job, will not factor in the popularity of a bunch of amateurs and/or chronic page-clickers. Kind of cool anyway, so thanks everybody.

One note: the entry submissions have been greatly reduced in size, making some of them hard to read. But all of them will allow posted comments.

Caesarstone + Dwell design competition

November 19th, 2008

Here’s my four-board entry for the design competition. It was submitted on November 3, 2008 and first round finalists are to be announced on December 10 or soon thereafter. You can see the rules and requirements at the Dwell site.

A very special thanks to Loren Roberts for all of his excellent advice and support. Additional thanks to Gerry Weber for his world-class feedback and Pamela Smith for just about everything else. Software credits : Rhino 4 for modeling, ASGVIS’ V-Ray for rendering, Adobe InDesign for layout.

Pamela Bookcase : Sustainability

June 29th, 2008

Overall rendering

This is a work-in-progress for the design of a ’sustainable,’ yet still cool, piece of furniture. By sustainable, I don’t mean its made of bamboo, recycled bottles, or plastic bags — heck no!

First of all, I am using the term ’sustainable’ to denote high quality — such that you might actually keep this around for 20 (or 50) years, as opposed to buying cheaper, lower-quality alternatives that would degrade and not last as long. Please refer to your nearest IKEA for examples of their “buy once, build once, just never move the damn thing or the particle board will explode!” school of design.

Secondly, I propose high quality materials (aluminum + manufactured plywood) that, if needed, are 100% recyclable, at some distant point in the future. But, hey, who’s going to recycle a masterpiece, anyways? This is the anti-sustainability sustainability. Its so cool, well-built, and long-lasting that you never even need to think about recycling … but you could.
